Think of Yankee clubs from 1927, '36 and '61. The 1955 Dodgers and 1975 Reds. All were mighty and considered to be in the top echelon of all teams to ever field a baseball diamond. However, let us not forget the 1929 Philadelphia Athletics who were a behemoth in their own right, just loaded with talent and Hall of Famers. From 1929-1931, the Athletics dominated the sport with consecutive World Series wins in '29 and '30 and were eventually defeated by the Cardinals in seven games following the regular 1931 season. With Connie Mack at the helm, and superstars Foxx, Cochrane, Collins and more, this team was destined to outperform their foes.
Two signed sheets accompany this lot with a total of thirty (30) signatures from the 1929 Philadelphia A's. The first album page, measuring approx. 5" x 7.5" includes the following signatures: Dykes, Hale, Ebling (trainer), Quinn, Haas, Earnshaw, Cochrane (HOF), Rommel, Boley, Miller, Summa, French, Orwoll, Shores, J. Cronin(his only year in professional baseball), Walberg, Collins (HOF), Burns, Yerkes, Perkins and Wm. Kid Gleason ('19 White Sox manager, d.'33). The second sheet, also measuring approx 5" x 7.5", has been folded to 3.25" x 5", and includes the following autographs: Brown, Bishop, Quinn, Grove (HOF), Perkins, Foxx (HOF), Cochrane (HOF), Earnshaw, and Simmons (HOF).
All the signature are exceptional, mostly '8-10' in strength. Aside from a signed panoramic photo, this has to be the finest assembly of signatures from 1929 Athletics you will find. Unimprovable! Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from James Spence Authentication(JSA).
The Roth Collection consists of a large collection of baseball signatures from 1925-1929. Our consignor's mother, Mrs. Loretta Roth(Watt), owned cigar stands inside the distinguished Ryan and St. Paul hotels in the Minneapolis area. She befriended Grace Comiskey(daughter in-law to Charles), and due to her love and knowledge of baseball, was given "all access" to players of the time. We are proud to offer this amazing find with some simply remarkable signatures including Ruth, Cobb, Johnson, Alexander, and so many more!
