Sprawling a full five inches across, this Grover C Alexander signature has an unmatched presentation quality. In combing through auction catalogs, dealer inventories and personal collections alike, one will travail to find a comparable example. Alexander, who didn't possess the same stature as his contemporaries like Johnson or Mathewson, remained aloof later in life as well, thus creating a shortage of his signatures in the market. When found, Alexander signatures generally derive from the 40's and 50's. An early penning like this one, which dates to his playing days, is exceedingly scarce. Off-white album page measures approx 7.75" x 3.5" and has a few tac holes and folding. The signature of 'Old Pete' is exceptional and easily rates '8' or better - he also included 'St Louis Cardinals' below his signature. Dated in another hand to the left is 1926 beneath his newspaper caption. Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from James Spence Authentication(JSA).
The Roth Collection consists of a large collection of baseball signatures from 1925-1929. Our consignor's mother, Mrs. Loretta Roth(Watt), owned cigar stands inside the distinguished Ryan and St. Paul hotels in the Minneapolis area. She befriended Grace Comiskey(daughter in-law to Charles), and due to her love and knowledge of baseball, was given "all access" to players of the time. We are proud to offer this amazing find with some simply remarkable signatures including Ruth, Cobb, Johnson, Alexander, and so many more!
