What’s a Babe Ruth Signed Baseball Really Worth?

So, how much is that Babe Ruth signed baseball worth? The value, you ask? It all depends, really. If you have a Babe Ruth autographed baseball, consider yourself pretty fortunate. However, don’t assume that you just won the lottery either. Values of Ruth signed baseballs can literally span $1,000-$10,000 and up. When it comes to evaluating a Ruth autographed baseball, there are several factors involved. If you are looking to sell your Babe Ruth signed item, please continue reading below. We’ve listed a few here for you, in order of importance:

Strength of the signature.

This is definitely the most important factor. A gorgeous ball that is perfectly white, but yields a faint signature is remains lower on the value scale. Take a look at the two below:

Notice any differences? I am pretty sure you can guess which ball is much more valuable than the other. As you can imagine, the value of a Babe Ruth signed baseball can vary quite a bit.

Condition of the baseball.

A stunning Ruth signature graced with a backdrop of a ball similar to that in The Sandlot, and you’re not in the same league (sorry for the pun) as one which has a crisp, white creamy surface. What you really want is the best of both worlds – signature strength and the condition of the ball. The value, or worth of a Babe ruth autographed baseball comprises many variables. Here is an example of I am talking about:

Number of autographs on the baseball.

A single signed baseball will supersede its multi-signed counterpart nine times out of ten. Most collectors strongly prefer a Ruth single signed ball over one with multiple autographs. This even goes for team signed balls in most cases.

Location of the Ruth autograph on the baseball.

Babe Ruth Autographed Baseball Value.  In general, most collectors of vintage signed baseballs prefer one that has a “sweet spot” autograph. In other words, the signature will be located where the seems are the closest together (see images above). Ruth single signed baseballs that are not autographed on the sweet spot are the anomaly here. The vast majority have Ruth on the coveted sweet spot, so this is typically a non-issue.

In closing, Babe Ruth signed baseballs and all Ruth autographed memorabilia, will always remain in high demand. Make no mistake, Ruth signatures are not particularly rare, especially within the scope of vintage baseball autographs. We get at least one call and email a week with someone who has a Babe Ruth signed item, but in some cases, the owners perception of value is not realistic with market conditions. The value of Ruth signatures are very easy to pinpoint a value because dozens of them come up for sale throughout the year.
We base our values on pieces that have sold, not on what someone is asking for an item. We can scour Amazon or even eBay and find several people and dealers asking some pretty unreasonable prices. However, these items are not necessarily being sold at those same high asking prices.
