Vintage Rarities II - Autographs, Cards, and Related Memorabilia

Here we find the final lot from a very impressive collection of vintage autographed photos, dating c.1916-1917. This one shows us Charles Albert Bender as he prepares for his next shot at the range. Bender, like many Native Americans at the time, was given the moniker "Chief" due to his Native American roots (his mother was believed to be from the Chippewa tribe). His first taste of professional ball began in Dillsburg, PA where he agreed to play a game for the sum of $5. After another year of semi-pro ball, he landed in the Majors with the Philadelphia A's as a 19 year-old rookie. His numbers were quite impressive and included 17 victories with a low 3.07 ERA. Bender was known for his cerebral approach to the game and always maintaining an even keel demeanor.

Chief was inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame in 1953, just a year before his passing. This is one of the earliest known signed images of C.A. Bender you will ever find. Measuring approx. 5" x 7", this sepia toned photograph has been affixed to a thick, vintage album book like backing. The photo does have some soiling present, yet still remains in good overall condition. The signature, "Yours Very Truly Chief C.A. Bender", has been inked in flowing black fountain pen, strong in most areas. Bender signatures of the "cut" variety are accessible within the marketplace and still command a nice premium. However, signed photos which date to a Dead Ball era player's career are nearly impossible to locate. Here is a fantastic opportunity to acquire such a piece. Accompanied by a Full Letter of Authenticity from James Spence Authentication(JSA).
