"Ee-yah!!"
Offered is another very fine photo from our collection of c.1916-1917 'Dead Ball' era autographs. Here we find Hugh 'Hughie' Jennings pictured in his famous knee high stance, where he proudly signed at the bottom "Best wishes Hughie Jennings." Hugh was a fine player by his own right from the later half of the 19th century through 1903. After a short yet successful stint as a trial lawyer, Hughie came back to the game as a manager and teamed up with Ty Cobb for the Tigers in 1907. There he lasted until 1925 before retiring from the game for good.
Jennings signed pieces, on any medium, are extremely rare due to his early death in 1928. From our records, this is the first signed image we've ever seen made available for sale. The signature is more apparent when held at an angle as opposed to a direct observation. The photo measures approx. 5" x 7" and has been nice affixed to a vintage heavy stock backing. This light sepia toned image is in very good condition with some minor soiling. A fair amount of staining on the outer edges of the stock and reverse are evident. Overall, we find a stunning image with a signature from one of the most collected early American ballplayers. Accompanied by a Full Letter of Authenticity from James Spence Authentication(JSA).
