Johannes Peter Wagner, who played shortstop for the menacing Pittsburgh Pirates, displayed some of the greatest raw power of his time. All five tool shortstop prospects of today are compared to Honus as he is widely considered the best to ever play the position. Born to German immigrants, Wagner's mother began calling him Hans at a young age and it stuck, later turning into the Honus that we all know today. Wagner made his major league debut in 1897 with the Louisville Colonels of the American Association as he hit .338, later joining the Pirates in 1900. He then went on to completely dominate the next decade, leading the majors in nearly every single statistical category. As one of the five original members of the baseball Hall of Fame, Honus Wagner was inducted in 1936, sealing his mark on the game of baseball forever.
Here we find an absolutely incredible lot. This original sepia toned photo of Wagner, measuring approx. 5" x 7", pictures Hans during his playing career, and has been signed by The Flying Dutchman himself. Elegantly signed, "With compliment of J. Honus Wagner Capt. Pgh B.B. Club 8-19-16." Wagner autographs dating into the 30's and 40's are scarce but certainly can be found with an earnest search. However, one such as this, dating to his playing days are nearly non-existent. This is the first autographed Honus Wagner photo which dates to his playing career that we have handled. Moreover, it has been several years since another has been brought to auction for public sale.
Until shown otherwise, we confidently proclaim this to be the finest signed image of Wagner from his playing days. The black fountain pen ink signature is extremely bold. The photo is in good condition with some age staining and the exterior album page backing has moderate staining and wear. Just a phenomenal piece! Accompanied by a Full Letter of Authenticity from James Spence Authentication(JSA).
