Christy Mathewson c.1913 World Tour Real Photo Postcard (Velox) - SGC Authentic. Newly discovered!
We are extremely pleased to offer this newly discovered real photo postcard of the one and only, Christy Mathewson. This spectacular piece of history peaks the interest of every vintage baseball collector. Whether you collect postcards, type cards, photographs, or just Mathewson himself, you would feel remissed should you overlook this lot.
Not just any postcard, this particular image was captured while Matty was on the famed World Tour during the years 1913-1914. The uniform doned by Mathewson in this image was custom made for the Tour, with an American themed emblem stitched on the sleeve. More easily recognizable is his cap which also has the red, white, and blue shield like design. The Tour featured both World Series contestants from the '13 season; the New York Giants and Chicago White Sox. Both teams went barnstorming from city to city across the U.S. and abroad, as far off as Egypt and Japan. Upon close inspection of the background in this image, you will find a picturesque hilly backdrop. With this in mind, and knowing that Mathewson remained on the mainland for his portion of the Tour, our best educated guess as to where this photo was taken is narrowed down to the Western United States. Mathewson made appearances in many Southwestern cities throughout California (Oxnard, San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Oakland) and Arizona (Bisbee and Douglas).
The condition of this postcard is excellent with just minute corner and edge wear. The 'Authentic' grade set forth by SGC can be attributed to the fact that they have never seen another like it, therefore making it difficult to judge. The reverse is very clean with no writing and has not been postally used. Only a small rectangular amount of residue can be seen, otherwise very clean.
'Scarce' and 'Rare' simply do not cut it as adjectives to describe just how difficult it would be to find another one of these postcards. Collectors of pre-war cards are always in anticipation of the next 'find' and begin salivating when it comes to fruition. Here is the fruit of your labor - you simply cannot let this one pass you by. A piece worthy of inclusion for display in a Hall of Fame exhibit. SGC encapsulated.
